Faculty of the Barcelona Festival of song
The strength of the Barcelona Festival of Song lies in its faculty, a team of internationally recognized performers and researchers of the Latin American and Iberian vocal repertoire.
PATRICIA CAICEDO, M.D., Ph.D
Considered the voice of the Iberian and latin American art song and often described as her ambassador, soprano and musicologist Patricia Caicedo is one of the leading interpreters and researchers of the Iberian and Latin American Art Song Repertoire. She has sung in the United States, Canada, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Russia, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Latin America.
Patricia has recorded eleven CDs dedicated to the art song repertoire in Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese and Indigenous languages and published numerous scholarly editions of scores and books, including The Latin American Art Song: Sounds of the Imagined Nations, the go-to history on its subject. She often visits universities and conservatories around the world as a guest artist and teacher.
Caicedo is the founder and director of the Barcelona Festival of Song®, a 10-day Summer Course and performance series on the history and interpretation of the Latin American and Spanish Vocal repertoire.
Caicedo is the host of the Latin American and Iberian Art Song Podcast, in which she interviews composers and leading experts from across the world.
Patricia holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a Medical Doctor´s degree from the Escuela Colombiana de Medicina. Patricia is a member of the Executive Board of the International Music Council.
Walter Aaron Clark, Ph.D.
Prof. Clark’s specialty is the music of Spain and Latin America, and he is the founder/director of the Center for Iberian and Latin American Music at the University of California, Riverside, where he is a Distinguished professor.
He is the series editor for Oxford University Press’s Currents in Latin American and Iberian Music, editor-in-chief for the Ibero-American area of Grove Music Online, and he also serves on the editorial boards of Revista de Musicología, Monumentos de la música española, and Música em contexto.
He received his doctorate in musicology from UCLA (1992), where he wrote his dissertation under the guidance of the late Robert M. Stevenson. He also holds performance degrees in classical guitar from the North Carolina School of the Arts (B.M.), where he studied with Jesús Silva and performed in a master class with Andrés Segovia; and the University of California, San Diego (M.A.), where he was a student of Pepe Romero. The Spanish King recognized his contribution to the preservation of Spanish culture by naming him a Comendador de la Órden de Isabel la Católica.
Anna Martí Mallorquí
Born in Girona, Catalunya, Anna is a journalist and linguist. She has devoted most of her life to perfect her mother tongue, the Catalan. She has been trained with some of the most important experts in Catalan language achieving the highest degrees of Catalan spoken and written.
LENINE SANTOS, PH.D
Born in Brasilia, Brasil, Lenine Santos is one of the best interpreters of the Brazilian art song of his generation. He received his doctorate in voice at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP). His dissertation was about the Brazilian Art Song.
Lenine began his musical career at a very young age with the String Orchestra of SESI, studying violin. Later on, he entered the Brasília School of Music where he studied voice. Later on he studied with the well known singer Niza de Castro Tank.
Lenine has several recordings of Brazilian Art Song and is a stable member of the faculty of the Barcelona Festival of Song since 2012. He is a professor of voice at the Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro.
ALBERTO PACHECO, Ph.D.
Alberto José Vieira Pacheco teaches at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Between 2015 and 2022, he was a Professor of Music at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. He holds the degrees of Ph.D. in Music from UNICAMP (Universidade Estadual de Campinas), Brazil.
He is author of 5 books - "O Canto Antigo Italiano", "Castrati e outros virtuoses: a prática vocal carioca sob influência da corte de D. João VI", "O Cancioneiro dos periódicos da Fundação Biblioteca Nacional (1842-1922)", "Guia musical dos periódicos da Fundação Biblioteca Nacional and “Álbum de Armia: gemidos sobre o túmulo de uma brasileira”, many scientific papers and many musical editions.
Pacheco has extensive experience as a singer, collaborating as a soloist tenor on 5 CDs. Pacheco is a founding member and musical director of the Academia dos Renascidos, a group that aims to perform the Luso-Brazilian vocal repertoire. He also took part in the organization of events, in particular, the International Congress "A Língua Portuguesa em Música", held in Lisbon (2012) and in Rio de Janeiro (2018), of which he was the general coordinator and main proponent.
JOSEP BUFORN
Born in Barcelona, Josep Buforn studied at the Conservatory of Music of the Liceu, at The Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (UK), and at the Municipal Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Maria Jesús Crespo and graduated with the highest honors. He has participated in masterclasses with Luiz De Moura Sousa, Drath Nina, Nina, and Peter Bithell Svetlanova.
He has extensive experience as an accompanist pianist, maestro repetiteur, and chamber music, having collaborated with the Vallès Symphony Orchestra, National Of Catalonia (OBC), and the Barcelona Municipal Band.
He is a sought collaborative pianist, often performing with prestigious performers, festivals, and contests in the international opera scene, such as the "Francisco Viñas International Singing Contest" (Barcelona) or the "Festival de Peralada" (Girona). He also collaborates with Liceu Opera House, and he is resident pianist of the Palau de la Música Catalana.
As a soloist, he has been awarded first prize in the "Young Performers" of Vilafranca del Penedès and at the "First Piano Competition Ricard Viñes" in Lleida. As an accompanist, he recently won the prize for the best accompanist at the "State Competition Intercentros" in Madrid.
Margarida Ullate estanyol
Margarida Ullate y Estanyol is the current director of the are of Sound and Audiovisual, one of the four documentary units of the Biblioteca de Cataluña. She has a degree in Library Science and Documentation from the University of Barcelona. She also studied piano at the Academia Marshall. She has worked in the Bergnes de las Casas Library, the Archive of the Gran Teatro del Liceo and, the Music Department of the Cambridge University Library where she expended nine months. In 1996 she started working at the Library of Catalonia. She is an active member of the Asociación Española de Documentación Musical and the secretary of the National Archives Commission of the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives.
Nikos stavlas, ph.d
Born in Greece Nikos received a PhD in Piano Performance Practice at Goldsmiths, University of London under the supervision of Keith Potter and Andrew Zolinsky. His area of research is Ludwig van, a film and a musical composition on Beethoven by the Argentinian composer Mauricio Kagel.
He has participated in several competitions and won, among others, two first prizes in Pan-Hellenic competitions as well as two second prizes in the G. Thymis Competition, Greece. He has appeared several times as a soloist with orchestras in Greece and Albania, and has given solo and chamber music recitals in Greece, Albania, Italy, Spain, Belgium, USA and the United Kingdom.
He is a member of the faculty of the Barcelona Fetival of Song since 2014. He has several recordings of Latin American and Catalan art song together with soprano Patricia Caicedo.
FLAVIO MELLO, M.M.
Master in Teaching Musical Practices at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) / Brazil, he is co-author of the Anthology of Brazilian Art Song published by Mundo Arts Publications. His repertoire includes Songs, Operas, and world premieres of Brazilian Vocal Repertory, performed in Theaters and Concert Halls in Brazil and Latin America.
Lori Sen, DMA
Turkish mezzo-soprano and Fulbright alumnus Lori Şen is known for her versatility in various vocal genres, including opera, art songs, musical theater, and jazz. Lori has performed in Turkey, Europe and the United States.
Outstanding expert in the Sephardic art song genre, in her doctoral dissertation, she cataloged this repertoire. She created a Ladino diction guide for singers, a repertoire that integrates Western classical elements and arrangements of traditional Sephardic popular literature. Lori promotes this repertoire in recitals and conferences on her Sephardic history, language, and culture, as well as on stylistic features of Sephardic music.
She teaches at the University of Maryland School of Music and is an Adjunct Professor of Voice at the Peabody Preparatory of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Since she participated in the Barcelona Festival of Song in 2018, she has been its ambassador.
Alba guerrero, cantaora
Flamenco singer born in Huelva and settled in Barcelona, Alba received her bachelors and masters degrees at the ESMUC. At her beginnings, she performed at tablaos like El Cordobés, Tablao de Carmen or Tarantos in Barcelona. Currently, she alternates his commitments as a soloist at prestigious international festivals with appearances such as the one made in the film-concert Blancanieves by Pablo Berger together with guitarist Chicuelo.
She started composing in 2010 with the premiere of 7 dias at the DeCajón Festival!. Some of her compositions include And continues with the shows Un secreto a voces, Polifonía jonda y Pa'mi Manuela. Her first album Seda y Esparto was named one of the ten best flamenco albums of 2015.
Her work is based on three aspects: has experience as an interpreter, research and teaching of flamenco. She is the author of the first methodology for the teaching of flamenco, Método de Cante Flamenco Global.
Rosa Montals
Rosa is graduated in Library Science and Documentation from the University School of Library and Information Science of Barcelona, ith piano studies at the Isaac Albéniz Conservatory of Music in Girona and the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Liceo. She is specialized in the treatment and description of printed music. Rosa has collaborated in the organization of the archive of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, has participated in working groups, exhibitions, periodicals and other projects related to musical documentation. He is a member of the Spanish Association of Musical Documentation and, a member of the Official College of Bibliothecaris-Documentalists of Catalonia (COBDC). Since 2006 she is the head of the Music Section of the Library of Catalonia.
