8th Barcelona Festival of Song®
Summer Program & Concert Series of
Latin-American & Spanish Vocal Repertoire

June 28 - July 7, 2012

Mission

The mission of the Barcelona Festival of Song® is to promote and preserve the Latin-American and Iberian vocal repertoire. We study repertorie in Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Catalan.

This is a mission we are committed to in a time where the training of the classical singer, continues being focused mainly in the Centro European music tradition, ignoring a very important part of the world´s music heritage.

For this reason the centerpiece of the Barcelona Festival of Song® is a Course focused on the history and interpretation of the Latin American and Spanish Vocal Repertoire. This course focused not only in interpretation but also in historical and musicological aspects. We think that is very important that the singer knows where this repertoire comes from, in which historical and social context was it written as well as learn who are the main composers by country.

Besides receiving several hours of vocal literature, history and diction classes the students receive many hours of master class in which they learn interpretation aspects, like diction and style. The goal is to be prepared for the 2 final public concerts in which all participants have the opportunity to perform. These concerts take place at beautiful venues at the heart of Barcelona.

To be coherent with our mission of preservation and promotion of the Latin-American and Spanish vocal repertoire and also because we consider very important to support contemporary composers, every year the Festival commissions a renowned Ibero-American composer to compose a new cycle of songs that is premiered during the festival.

One of our unique offerings is that each of the participants at the Festival has his/her own personalized development program, designed around his/her unique abilities, level of development and goals. The goal is to reinforce their strengths and to identify and overcome their weaknesses. For this reason there is no age limit.

Our program is design for voice students and voice teachers. Every year, among our participants we receive university teachers who are interested in learning vocal literature, history and interpretation of this repertoire. We provide them with all the necesary information to be able in the future to guide their students about available resources, repertory, diction, etc.

We hope you start sharing our mission with us and helping us in promoting this important part of the world´s musical heritage!
