Course Contents

Participants to this course will have many opportunities to perform and learn from great teachers. Every day they have master classes, lectures and workshops dedicated to the different countries's history, composers and songs. They also have diction classes, Alexander Technique sessions and private coachings.

Once the participant have register we send him or her the repertory that she or he has to prepare for the course. Each participant will have to prepare minimum 10 art songs from the Spanish or Latin American repertoire. The songs are in Spanish, Catalan and Brazilian Portuguese. The board of directors of the Barcelona Festival of Song will design a unique program for each singer with songs in the three languages we study. Singers should arrive to Barcelona with their repertoire ready to sing at the master classes. At the classes we will help them to perfect their diction, style and interpretation.

Each of the participants at the Festival will have his/her own personalized development program, designed around his/her unique abilities, level of development & goals. The goal is to reinforce their strengths and to identify and overcome their weaknesses.

Since 2008 a big part of the participants are university voice teachers who wish to adquiere the knowledge about this repertoire in order to pass it to their students at home.

In 2012 the Festival will take place at the Residencia de Investigadors and at different venues around the city.

MASTER CLASSES

At the Barcelona Festival of Song we will have master classes, where the instructor works with each singer on a rotating basis. Those observing learn by example and can relate new concepts of technique and interpretation to their own preparation. Everyday we offer 4 hours of Master Class

LECTURES

Every day we have 2 hours of lectures about different countries and composers with the intention of providing participants with the knowlegde and tools to be able, in the future, to research for themselves and find the music and sources they need. We visit archives and library collections of music.

The Latin American Art Song: An introduction. History and development of the genre in the context of musical nationalism.

The Art Song in Spain during the XIX and XX Centuries: History, development, composers and repertory.

The Catalan Art Song: History and development during XIX and XX Centuries, main composers and works.

The Brazilian Art Song During the XIX and XX Centuries. Most representative composers and works.

The Andean Countries: Colombia, Venezuela, Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador. Most representative composers and works of XIX and XX centuries.

Southern Cone: Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina. Most representative composers and works of XIX and XX century

PRIVATE LESSONS

In addition to frequent individual work in the master classes, Active participants are scheduled for private lessons with Patricia Caicedo, Stela Brandao, Isabel Aragón

COACHINGS SESSIONS

Individual coachings are scheduled for all active participants, focusing on musical preparation with respect to style, tradition and accuracy of presentation.

PERFORMANCES

All active singers have the opportunity to perform, at the discretion of the Artistic Director, in two or more public recitals in Barcelona.

CONCERTS

Inaugural concert (Including the premiere of the art song cycle commissioned by the Barcelona Festival of Song)

2 Concert with the participants open to the public, the closing concert is present by the participants.

5 concerts with well known artists from around the world.

WORKSHOPS

Faculty Master Classes/ Workshops Each member of our international faculty will present a master class devoted to the repertoire in a particular linguistic tradition or area of interest.

Alexander Technique sessions, relaxation and breathing techniques workshops. Guitar Master Classes and individual lessons

DICTION

Spanish/Portuguese/Catalan Language Study/Workshops Classes in Spanish, Catalan and Brazilian Portuguese diction integrated into the weekly schedule, is offered to all attendees.
