The opening concert of the Barcelona Festival of Song is always a special event. This concert is the welcoming event to the participants who come from different parts of the world to celebrate Latin-American and Spanish Music. Is also the concert in which the song cycle commissioned by the festival is debuted. In 2012 the commisioned composer was Cuban-American guitarist and composer José Lezcano.
In 2012, to celebrate its 8th edition, the opening concert will take place at Salón Vigatá of the emblematic Palau Moja. During XVIII this room was the place where the most important celebrations and balls took place. Important people like Jacint Verdaguer, Sant Joan Bosco, Alfonso XII and the current Spanish King have lived at this Palau.
Performers will be soprano Patricia Caicedo, guitarist and composer José Lezcano and pianist Daniel Ligorio.
MEET THE ARTIST
PATRICIA CAICEDO, Soprano
Recognized as “The Voice of the Latin American and Spanish Art Song” and often described as its ambassador, Colombian-Spanish soprano and musicologist Patricia Caicedo positioned herself as a leading interpreter of the Latin American and Spanish vocal repertory and has sung in the United States, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Russian, Puerto Rico and Latin-America to public and critical acclaim.
Singing in Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Quechua and Nahuatl she draws listeners into the world of beauty, poetry, and warmth that is the Latin American & Spanish Art Song – a world that continues to thrive because of her determination to ensure its future. As one reviewer noted, “Reflecting her deep emotional connection to the music, she interprets the repertory with extraordinary sensitivity and sweetness.”
She has recorded five CDs dedicated to the Latin American Art Song --"Aves y Ensueños - Colombian Art Songs by Jaime León" (2011), "Estrela é Lua nova..." (2011), -"De mi corazón latino" (2010), “To My Native City” (2005) and “ Lied:Art Songs of Latin America” (2001)-- has collaborated on other CDs. All are available for purchase on this website.
As a musicologist and teacher Caicedo is internationally recognized as the leading expert in the study and performance of the Latin American & Spanish art song, a tradition she has almost single-handedly rescued from extinction. Her pioneering books The Latin American Art Song: A Critical Anthology and Interpretive Guide for Singers and The Colombian Art Song - Jaime León: Analysis and Compilation of his works for voice & piano Vol.1 & 2. are consider reference books in the field.
She is the founder and artistic director of the Barcelona Festival of Song, a Summer Program and concert series focused on the study of the history and interpretation of the Latin American & Spanish Art Song repertoire, an event that will be reaching its 8th edition in 2012. With her talent, knowledge, and determination to preserve an important part of the world’s musical heritage, Patricia Caicedo is indeed The Voice of the Latin American & Spanish Art Song.
DANIEL LIGORIO, PIANO
Considerado por la crítica y el público como uno de los jóvenes pianistas de más proyección del panorama nacional. Ha ofrecido recitales solo y con orquesta en las salas y los festivales más prestigiosos del pais con gran éxito de critica y publico. Destaquemos la opinión del celebre compositor Xavier Montsalvatge ““El arte pianistico de Daniel Ligorio no engaña, porque es por encima de todo, auténtico” en un recital suyo en el Auditorio Nacional con la orquesta de Radio Television Española o la del critico Xavier Cester “desde la inolvidable visita de Claudio Arrau no escuchabamos en Barcelona un emperador pianísticamente tan extraordinario” en ocasion de su interpretacion del quinto concierto de Beethoven en el Palau de la música con la Orquesta Sinfónica nacional de Cataluña.
En los últimos años ha intervenido en proyectos tan importantes como la grabación del concierto para piano y orquesta del maestro Joaquín Rodrigo con el sello Naxos; el estreno internacional, con motivo del cincuenta aniversario de juventudes musicales de España, del concierto para dos pianos y orquesta “Juventus” de Antón Garcia Abril; la grabación de la integral para piano de Manuel de Falla y próximamente la integral de los trios de Turina para piano violin y cello con el Trio Arriaga
Sus premios como pianista y componente de diferentes grupos de camara le han abierto las puertas a importantes giras de conciertos tanto en Europa como en America, entre los cuales destacamos Premios a nivel estatal como el concurso nacional de Juventudes Musicales de España, el Infanta Cristina, o fundación Yamaha, a nivel internacional el "Kendall Taylor Beethoven Piano Prize",el Quilter piano competition , el "Hopkinson Gold Medal & Sydney & Peggy Shimmin Piano Prize" así como el International Tournamet Competition después de ser seleccionados como mejor grupo de música de cámara Español.
Ha colaborado con el Cuarteto Brodsky, el Cuarteto de la Gewendhause de Leipzig, el Cuarteto de Praga, el cuarteto Pezze Italiano, el director Marcello Biotti, Robert King, Josep Pons, y las orquestas más prestigiosas del pais, tambien destacar su colaboración como asesor musical con el director Ventura Pons grabando fragmentos pianísticos para su película “the food of love”
Actualmente prepara para el sello Naxos la grabación de los trios de Thomas Breton y los quintetos de Conrado del Campo, así como una gira de conciertos promocionando su ultima grabación de la integral para piano del maestro Manuel de Falla.
JOSE LEZCANO, guitar
Two times nominated for the GRAMMY, Lezcano has been described by the New Millennium Guitar Magazine as "a superb guitarist as well as a first-rate composer and arranger," twice grammy-nominated musician José Manuel Lezcano has captivated audiences on four continents. His programs featuring traditional and Latin American repertory, and his own original compositions have taken him as recitalist, collaborative musician, and concerto soloist from Carnegie Recital Hall and the North-South Consonance Series in New York City to major venues and festivals in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, China, the Czech Republic and Germany.
Born in Havana, Cuba in 1960, Lezcano was invited to join the faculty of Keene State College in New Hampshire in 1991, where he is Professor of Music and teaches courses in guitar, music theory, and Latin American music; he directs the Guitar Orchestra and Latin American ensemble. He earned degrees from Peabody Conservatory (BM), University of South Carolina (MM), and Florida State University (Ph.d. music theory.
José has earned numerous awards, including first prize in the MTNA National Guitar Competition, the NH State Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship, NHMTA Composer of the Year (2002 & 07), KSC Distinguished Research Award, and a Fulbright Award to Ecuador where he performed as orchestral soloist and pursued research on indigenous guitar traditions. Jose's scholarly publications include Latin American Music Review, Soundboard, and the Latino Encyclopedia.
LEZCANO´S SONG CYCLES
In 2012 Lezcano was commisioned by the Barcelona Festival of Song to write a new cycle of songs to be debuted at tha opening concert.
Commisioned by the Barcelona Festival of Song 2012 Lezcano wrote a new song cycle with poetry by Jorge Nef, title CANCIONES NOSTALGICAS. This new cycle will debuted by Patricia Caicedo and José Lezcano at the opening concert of the Barcelona Festival of Song 2012 celebrated on June 28th, 2012.
Lezcano have written three song cycles setting to music poetry by Latin-American poets. The first one, Las canciones de Alfonsina was written in 2001 and debuted at a faculty concert in Keene State College that same year. This song cycle has 4 songs with poetry by Argentinean poet Alfonsina Storni (1892-1938).
In 2009, the Barcelona Festival of Song, a Summer Program and a Concert Series dedicated to the study of the history and interpretation of the Latin-American and Spanish Vocal repertoire, commissioned Dr. Lezcano to write a new song cycle setting to music the poems of Chilean poet Jorge Nef (1942). The cycle Canciones de lluvia was debuted at the opening concert of the Barcelona Festival of Song® celebrated at the Residencia d´investigadors del CSIC in Barcelona (Spain) on July the 2nd, 2009. Lezcano dedicated the cycle to soprano Patricia Caicedo and to the Barcelona Festival of Song®. Patricia Caicedo and Lezcano debuted the cycle.
